How fast do dive centres on Koh Tao answer a new enquiry?
We sent 67 enquiries to dive centres on Koh Tao, the way a traveller would: on WhatsApp and Instagram, some in the afternoon and some in the middle of the night. Here is what came back, and what it means for anyone who runs a dive shop.
How we did it
On 15 and 16 October 2026 we wrote to dive centres on Koh Tao as ordinary customers. Some asked about an Open Water course for a beginner, others about fun dives for a certified diver, in English, Dutch, German or Spanish. 38 messages went out between about 01:00 and 02:00 Thai time, the rest in the afternoon and early evening.
We did not reply to keep the conversation going, so we could see whether a centre followed up on its own. After 48 hours without an answer we sent one short reminder. We never booked or paid. We counted a real answer as a message that actually answered the question, with a price, a date or availability. An automatic "thanks, we'll get back to you" did not count.
We do not name any centre. The point is not who is slow, but what happens to every enquiry that lands at the wrong hour.
At night, nobody answers fast
Not one of the 38 night messages got a real answer within the hour. The fastest came after 2.9 hours; most came after 6 to 9 hours, when the shop opened in the morning. The median was 7.2 hours.
In the afternoon the same island looks very different: the median wait was about 20 minutes, and 11 of the 15 real answers arrived within the hour, the fastest after just 2 minutes. Where we tested the same centre by day and by night, the gap was just as large.
So this is not about a bad team. Instructors are on the boat, teaching in the pool or asleep. But the traveller writing at 2 a.m. is often in a different time zone, planning their trip right then, and writing to several shops at once.
An auto-reply is not an answer
Many centres send an automatic message as soon as a chat comes in. None of the auto-replies we received answered the question about price or availability. Some arrived in a different language from the one we wrote in. The traveller still waits until morning for the real reply.
A fast answer is not yet a booking
- First a question back. At least 12 centres first asked something like "when was your last dive?" or "course or try dive?". Useful, but if that question arrives at 9 a.m., the booking needs another round of messages.
- Paying takes a detour. Not one reply included a link to book and pay. Centres that asked for a deposit wanted a bank transfer, PayPal or Wise, or mentioned a deposit without saying how to pay it. Some take cash in the shop only.
- Sent somewhere else. Several centres asked us to continue by email, on Instagram or on another number. Every extra step is a moment where a traveller can drop off.
- Follow-up is rare. Only 3 centres sent a second message on their own when we went quiet.
- Prices vary a lot. An Open Water course cost between 8,990 and 13,500 THB, with a median of about 11,000 THB. Travellers compare, and the first clear answer has a head start.
What dive centres can do about it
- Measure the time to a real answer, not to the first message. An instant auto-reply can hide a seven-hour wait.
- Put the price and the next step in the first reply: dates, what is included, and how to book.
- Make it easy to pay a deposit online with a link, instead of a bank transfer.
- Follow up once when a traveller goes quiet. Most centres never do.
- Cover the night. Saved replies, a team rota, or a tool that answers routine questions outside opening hours and hands everything else to your team.
Why we did this
We are building Talay, an inquiry assistant for dive centres. It answers routine questions on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger within a minute, at any hour, with the centre's own prices and rules. The AI reads the message to understand what the traveller asks and picks the reply from more than 250 fixed scenarios with the centre's own texts. Prices, policies and bookings always stay fixed. A centre can choose to let it write short answers to other questions, using only facts the centre approved, and the team can take over any chat at any time.
Want to see how that feels from the traveller's side? Try our demo dive centre, or write to info@talay.io if you'd like the full numbers for your own island.
Method in short: 67 enquiries to dive centres on Koh Tao via WhatsApp and Instagram, 15–16 October 2026. Night: 38 messages sent around 01:00–02:00 Thai time. "Real answer" means a reply that answers the question, not an auto-reply. One reminder after 48 hours. No bookings were made. Centres are not named.
